Guide to wedding dress alterations

 

Speak up! 

This is the perfect opportunity to discuss with your seamstress how you want the dress to look and so it’s important you voice your opinion if there’s something you want changing. If you want the sleeves a bit shorter, please say! It’ll make your seamstresses’ life a lot easier if you speak up during the fitting, not days later when it’s too late. Make sure you are 100% happy with everything before you leave your appointment.

 

 

What to bring with you

 

There are two things that are absolutely essential; the shoes you will be wearing on the day and the underwear you are wearing under the dress. Both these will have a massive impact on the alterations so don’t forget them! You might want to bring some family or friends with you but we advise you keep numbers to a minimum for your first fitting. Most brides will usually bring their mum and/or a close friend. 

Time it right

We recommend you book your first fitting 4-6 weeks before your wedding. The main reason for this is to allow for any body changes. However, if you know you want some major alterations done, such as beadwork or taking it in extensively, you should book your fitting even earlier. You want to avoid booking it too close to your wedding as you could potentially need 3 or 4 fittings and must allow plenty of time to fit these in. 

 

Maintaining

 

Once you start your alterations, it’s important that you maintain your weight and try to stay the same size. Continuing to lose weight after the first fitting can cause stress for both the seamstress and the bride as it means a lot of alterations have to be done twice, which means you end up paying twice too.
